reducing drinks a good idea or not?
Jul 21 2010 08:47 AM I'd be interested to know whether anyone else finds that reducing fluid intake is a good way to manage overactive bladder. Today my consultant suggested this is something I should do to help deal with the symptoms. Previously, i had always thought that it is not a good idea to do this as it can actually irritate the bladder and worsen urgency. Am I wrong? Does anyone else find that it works well in the longer term? I do limit fluids sometimes eg if I know I won't be able to get to a toilet / change my pad but I've always avoided doing it long-term. Thanks very much in advance for any advice. |

RE: reducing drinks a good idea or not?
Jul 22 2010 12:07 AM in general reducing fluid in is NOT a good idea, you need to stay hydrated and on top of that the urine will be more concentrated and may do the reverse of what you where told and could make the risk of a UTI higher. Stay away from caffeine but drink water and stay hydrated |

RE: reducing drinks a good idea or not?
Jul 22 2010 02:13 AM you do need a minum amout of fluid a day but drnking extra fluid can cause you to run to the bathroom more often when i becamincont i had to watch how much i drank before bed time and if I was going to be somwhere where i wouldn't be able to change right away so watching how much you drink in a day is a good idea but you do need to make sure you drink enough fluid a day to stay hydrated Trish |

Aug 08 2010 11:26 PM Cutting back on fluids is a very bad idea. Leaving aside that it's unhealthy -- water is how your body cleans itself out -- my urologist tells me I'm more likely to sense the urgency if I'm hydrated. |

RE: reducing drinks a good idea or not?
Sep 02 2010 03:56 PM Thank you for all your advice. I did try reducing drinks to follow the doctor's advice, but pretty much as most of you have said, it sometimes didn't make a substantial difference and sometimes actually seemed to make urgency worse - at times I was losing less with each 'accident' but seemed even less able to wait, so even though I was losing a smaller amount it was happening more frequently. It also seemed to lead to constipation, which I was told can make bladder problems worse too, so I won't carry on with that for the time being, at least not every day. When I talked to the GP, she said that most people really shouldn't drink less than 2 litres per day, and that especially with some medications it can be necessary to drink extra to avoid effects like constipation. |
