Tips for diapering

Nov 01 2010 06:43 AM

So today I bought a pack of the Depend fitted briefs because I have been experiencing a lot of leaks lately. I tried putting one on before just to see how they would fit and I realized I am horrible at diapering myself. Any tips for a snug fitting diaper?

I find what works best for me is standing up and backing up to a door or wall when changing. Start with bottom tapes first then top and then middle with a six tape diaper. I try to put my night diaper on at least 2 hours before bed cuz the fit can sometimes get loose and has to be snuged up before bed.

Partly because I have balance and coordination diffiuclties, I put mine on while lying on a bath mat on the floor. The goal is to do it often enogh to get a good fit, especially if you are using bosters, which I must do at night.

I too like to stand while I put on my diaper. As the guy said put the back of the diaper up against a wall or door and back up to it. That way you have both hands free. Make sure that the front and back come up the same and that you work the diaper back and fourth so that it is firmly into the crotch area. Then do the two bottom tabs first and then work your way up making sure you get a good snug fit. I wear two diapers at night and I make ssure to cut slits in the inner diaper so that it will leak into the second one. At night I also wear a pair of plastic panties.

You know if you have to do it by yourself standing up againest the wall is the best way. I have a very special wife, and she is the one that handles this while at home, she has a heart of gold.

I find laying down works best for me, and start with bottom tapes always. I was using the Tena briefs after being a long time Depend user, but I like the inner gathers that run down the inside of the Depend brief, as the cotton stuffer/liner I use as a booster fits right in and does not slide around or move at all. I just wish they would moke them MORE absorbant like the higher end diapers (Tena Supers and Abena). Standing up just does not give me a good fit, but there are times when there is not much of an alternative when you are out and need to change.

If you can lay down such as at home in the morning, do that, start with the bottom tapes work it one leg at a time making sure the leg gathers have a snug concealing hug of your thighs, then move to the center, at this point make sure you are pointing your source of leakage down as kc for whatever reason decided that cutting the pad area upwards near the waistband was a "good" idea. Anyway finally tape the top tapes so that the brief is about center and snug around the waist, if you use powder or lotion do not get it on the plastic or on the tapes.

When in public its best to lean up against a stall door, slide down the briefs also make sure you aren't in the process of leaking when you do so, if you have bowel problem you want to use some wipes and clean that up wiping the excess into the toilet, you can then put the wipes in your used brief. When you are sure you are clean and not leaking, get a new brief position the tape side to a wall, and then position your backside directly in front of it making sure the waistband is touching your back and not your butt. Pull the brief between your legs, tape the bottom tapes first similar to when laying down making sure the leg gathers are all snuggly hugging your thighs or else you may experience a leak between the legs. Finally tape the top tapes around the waist to make it snug. Wrap up the old brief, pull up your pants and put away your other supplies, if your in a handicap stall with a trashcan, you can just toss the brief there, otherwise just toss it in the nearest trashcan.

Hopefully that helped without getting too disgustingly descriptive (sorry if I did)

I only diaper at night, but find that a get a much better fit when I'm already in bed and laying down. It allows me to place my legs as I do my the taping in positions that are closer to how I will sleep.

Definetly have to get a good fit, and s really snug front panel, or it tends to leak at the leg creases for me. I have neverr gotten a good fit standing, it just works so-so when there is no other option...

Some diapers have "double tapes" that allow you to refasten the tapes over already fastened tapes. Tranquility slimline has a tape like this, and I find that those really help me get a good fit.

I would have to agree, either laying down or prop yourself up to get the back side around to tape or pin is the easiest. I have allergies with disposables so I use a pull-on terry cotton now, as I have for the last few years. But, with pre-folds, you have to be lying down to put them on correctly. Having said this, you should, as added protection, wear plastic pants, whether it be disposables or cloth diapers.

The place decides my position to diaper in. All the above are excellent ways to do so.
A tip on using powders both at home and in the field. It is best to dust the diaper itself lightly but thoroughly instead of dusting yourself unless your very carefull not to touch the tapes with powdered fingers. The slightest bit of powers, oils, vasaline, or rash creams make the tapes useless. When I'm changing in a restroom stall I apply powder directly down the front and back of the diaper after I have it on which for me saves a bit of time and works well when your in less familiar surroundings.

Great advice in here! After my accident I had a therapist show me the best ways to change depending on where I was.
For me I prefer to change using the wall method, as it enables a very fast change, and makes it easy if you are using the usual booster pads/powder ect.

The more tricky ways are changing in the car, at least for me. But that is a whole different topic.

When wearing the fitted Max Protection (w/3 tapes), this is usually how it goes...

~I lay down with the diaper underneath me.
~I start taping from the top down; and I make those top tapes as tight as they will go without coming off. With the second row of tapes, I attach them a little further out than the top row. And again, with the third, a little further out still. So the whole thing sorta looks like this...
(top row) [...=...=...]
(2nd row) [..=.....=..]
(bottom row) [.=.......=.]

(sorry, I could make that simpler if responses on these forums didn't all have to be in one paragraph.)

Not sure why, but that just seems to work best for me. Really, the best advice anyone here can give you is to just experiment. Find out what works best for you through trial and error.
